#41 Plans Change, But Your Goals don’t Have to w/ Rox Marthinussen
It was 2015 and I had just had the most amazing two months of my life. I was checking out of a luxurious villa with my own private pool in Bali and had just stuffed all of my things into my 36L backpack. After wiping the sweat off my forehead, I picked up my phone and checked my email one last time before heading to the airport.
I opened my inbox and was surprised to see an email with the subject line in all caps that read, “YOUR FLIGHT HAS BEEN CANCELED”.
As someone who identifies as an anxious person, my normal response would be to panic. But the panic never came. And instead, nerves of excitement ran all throughout my body and I could feel the tingle in my fingertips as I reread the message on my phone.
I wasn’t ready to leave the beautiful island of Bali. It was my Eat, Pray, Love moment: surfing secluded beaches, meeting other nomadic souls from around the world, going on dates with gorgeous and interesting men. I was having the time of my life.
But all good things have to come to an end, right? And even if I wanted to stay, I couldn’t. Didn’t I need more money? And all my belongings from home? More stability in my life? A well thought out plan?
If I’m being honest, I fantasized about staying. I dreamt of living in an international country my whole life. But the story I was telling myself was that I wasn’t ready.
So I stuck to my plan of enjoying my time in tropical paradise as much as I could before heading back to my real life.
Plans change though. And all it took was one mindset shift, one email and one volcano to alter the story in my head.
Against my logic, I decided to stay.
There I was. No fancy plan. Just me, my backpack and my ukulele.
This is how I made my big, international move from San Francisco to Bali. It was the best decision I’ve made and it was totally unplanned!
In my interview with Rox Marthinussen, she shares a similar story of how life worked out in her favor in an unexpected way.
After struggling in her career as one of the only women of color in a white male dominated industry, she made a plan to transition out of her role and dive into a new one as a life coach and entrepreneur.
The road was far from easy, filled with bumps and detours and even disease.
Despite her obstacles and failed plans, she was able to change her life and heal physically, emotionally and spiritually.
Having a plan to achieve your goals is a good thing. It’s recommended! But instead of becoming attached to how it’s supposed to happen, stay open and curious for other possible and surprising ways your dreams can come true.
ANNOUNCEMENT:
Do you have a big goal or dream?
Is there something that meaningful you’ve been wanting to achieve in your life for a long time and finally feel ready to make it happen?
Maybe it’s starting a business, creating the ideal relationship or reaching a health goal. Are you done simply thinking about it and ready to start executing on it?
I know how exciting a time this is. To be on the edge and ready to make a leap.
It’s also scary. And frustrating trying to do it alone for years and not seeing progress.
Having the right kind of support is the key to transforming your life. It was for me.
And if you’re in this phase right now, I’m happy to offer my support.
I am opening up a few spots in my private 1:1 Life Design coaching program. Here’s what my client Marie Heintges shared about us working together:
“Before we started working together I was in a place of feeling stuck and low in energy. Leannah offered a clear step-by-step process to break down my big goal into actual action steps. She holds a space for you, truly listens and knows how to direct the process in a clear, thoughtful and understandable way.”
I’m grateful and honored to have helped hundreds of clients and students take deliberate action towards their dream lives. And I’m excited to connect with you to potentially do the same.
