#58 - 10 Things I Love About Being a Filipino

It’s Asian American Pacific Islander heritage month and I’ve been reflecting on my Filipino upbringing, culture and values. Some of the fondest memories I have growing up are of our epic Filipino parties. If you’ve never been to one, here’s what they’re like:

Everyone is invited. The more the merrier - really. You could meet someone at the grocery store that same morning and invite them to the party, and everyone will receive your new guest like they’re family.

There is food covering every table surface and countertop. There is an overabundance - it’s pretty insane. If you Google “Filipino party” you’ll see what I’m talking about ;)

When you arrive, a well-meaning auntie will offer (shove) a paper plate and plastic cutlery in front of you, encouraging (forcing) you to eat, regardless if you’re hungry or not.

It’s customary to eat at least one plate, although two or more is ideal as a sign of respect and appreciation.

After hours of eating, singing karaoke and playing games, you’ll be offered “baon”, which is a take away care package of food (like plates and plates of it) so you can bring home to reheat and enjoy more of the food Filipinos are proud of.

If you haven’t caught on, food is at the center of our culture.

In this podcast episode, I’m celebrating AAPI Heritage month by sharing the 10 things I love about being a Filipino.

Our culture has deep rooted history and customs that are unique that I’m proud to share with you.
