#70 - 6 Steps to Ultimate Freedom by Landing a Remote Job w/ Kate Smith
It felt like I was glued to my office chair. Stuck with my butt in the seat until 5pm slowly rolled around. Even if there wasn’t any work to do for the rest of the day, I had to be there or else I’d look like a slacker.
I scanned the room. A few people were working. Others were on social media, or having personal conversations with other coworkers or going to the kitchen to find a snack out of boredom yet again.
So much time is wasted sitting around pretending to be productive. Did you know the average worker clocks in 8.8 hours a day, but only a small portion of that time is actually spent working. According to research, the time we spend being productive at work is 2 hours and 53 minutes or 39% of a working day.
Less than half the day is spent working 🤯
It makes a lot of sense. Our expectation is to work the full 8 hours, but research shows that the most productive people work for 52 mins straight with 17 minute breaks. It might not seem productive, but done consistently shows for a lot more work than the average employee.
The thing that bothered me the most about a desk job was having to sit there and pretend to work while I could have been doing other productive things with my time for my personal life. Like getting groceries outside of rush hour, going to the gym when it’s less packed or even running important errands when all businesses are actually open.
If I had the freedom to take care of my personal needs, life would have been so much easier. I would have been more productive and motivated at my 9-5 job.
Who’s with me on this?
I interviewed Kate Smith, remote career coach at the Remote Nomad and she teaches professionals how to land remote jobs with clarity and confidence.
She tells her personal story of how she spent nearly all of her savings to land a remote job and ended up starting a remote business of her own. Kate also shares her 6-step process for how to land a remote job and why applying to as many jobs as possible doesn’t work.
At the end of the episode Kate shares a couple of free resources 1) The Remote career playbook to take you more in depth through Kate’s signature process and 2) A resume revamp checklist specific to remote jobs. Download these here.
Now that I’m my own boss, I work harder and longer hours on some days and other days I rest.
I choose the days according to the natural rhythm of my life. Having the autonomy to do this helps my mental health and overall well being.
How do you design your days and weeks? Send me email and share with me :)
